About Ukulhas

Ukulhas is a slender island in Alif Alif Atoll — about 1,025 metres long and 225 wide, home to roughly 1,000 people — that has become the Maldives' best-known example of a community-run eco island. It pioneered a comprehensive waste-management system among inhabited islands and won the national Green Leaf Award in 2014, and its swept streets and cared-for shoreline show it. Tourism only began here in late 2012, so the village character is still very much intact.
