About Dhiffushi

Dhiffushi is a small fishing island of around 1,200 people on the eastern rim of Kaafu Atoll, about 37 km northeast of Male. Roughly 900 by 250 metres, it is one of the easternmost inhabited islands of the atoll, which keeps its lagoon-facing beaches quiet and its mornings open to the sea. Despite its size it carries a full village life of school, harbour and shady sand streets, with tourism concentrated along its northern beaches.

Where we shoot

Beaches & photo spots on Dhiffushi

North Bikini Beach

The island's largest designated tourist beach, white sand and turquoise shallows running toward the northern tip.

Sandbank off the north beach

The north beach tapers into an exposed sandbank — a clean, minimal backdrop at low tide.

East-facing shoreline

As one of Kaafu's easternmost islands, the ocean-side beach takes direct sunrise light over open water.

Harbour and ferry jetty

Working dhonis and the arrival jetty give documentary texture and leading lines toward the lagoon.

Practical notes for Dhiffushi

01
Bikini beach rules

Swimwear is only permitted on the designated tourist beaches (the island has more than one, with the north beach the largest); on village streets and public beaches shoulders and knees should be covered.

02
Getting there

The public ferry from Male's Villingili terminal runs daily except Mondays and Fridays (about 3 hours 15 minutes, roughly USD 1.50); scheduled speedboats such as the Mee Altec Express take 40-45 minutes for about USD 35 from Jetty 1 in Male.

03
Best season

The dry season from November to April brings the most reliable light and calm seas; this is the Maldives-wide pattern rather than anything specific to Dhiffushi.

04
Drones

Maldives-wide rules apply: every drone flight needs Maldives Civil Aviation Authority clearance plus permission from the island council, and processing takes weeks — plan well ahead or shoot from the ground.
