About Gulhi

Gulhi is one of the smallest inhabited islands in South Male Atoll — about 500 metres end to end, home to roughly 980 people — and the quietest stop on the Male-Maafushi ferry line. It offers the same shallow turquoise lagoons as its famous neighbour with a fraction of the crowd, and its jetty is a launch point for sandbank and shipwreck-snorkelling excursions.

Where we shoot

Beaches & photo spots on Gulhi

North Bikini Beach

The island's standout designated beach — parasols, calm shallow water, and house-reef snorkelling right off the sand.

South bikini beach

The second, smaller designated beach on the opposite end — usually emptier, good for clean uninterrupted sand-and-lagoon frames.

Harbour and ferry jetty

Dhonis at rest against the lagoon with Maafushi on the horizon — sunrise and blue-hour material minutes from any guesthouse.

Shipwreck snorkelling excursion

Boat tours from Gulhi reach a sunken wreck (near Keyodhoo, Vaavu Atoll) with nurse sharks and trevallies — underwater and freediving shoots by arrangement.

Before you go

Practical notes for Gulhi

01
Bikini beach rules

Gulhi has two designated tourist beaches, north and south, where swimwear is permitted; standard modest-dress rules apply in the village between them.

02
Ferry quirks

The public ferry from Male's Villingili Terminal departs at 15:00, takes about 80 minutes, and costs around 3 USD, returning from Gulhi at 08:00. There is no Friday service, and one island source also lists no Monday ferry — confirm before travelling.

03
Drone permits

As everywhere in the Maldives, drone flights need MNDF and Civil Aviation Authority approval plus island consent — allow several weeks of lead time.

Yes — Gulhi has a designated bikini beach, so swimwear and beachwear frames are fine there. Elsewhere on the island modest dress applies, which we plan around.

Often yes. Drone rules vary by island and resort; we check Gulhi's current permissions before your session and, where flying isn't possible, plan aerials from a nearby sandbank.
