About Maamigili

Maamigili is the largest and busiest island in South Ari Atoll, with nearly 2,800 residents, about 108 km from Male, and Villa International Airport on its southern edge. Nicknamed 'Whale Shark Island', it sits beside Maamigili Beyru, the outer-reef stretch famous for year-round whale shark sightings, and works as both a gateway to the atoll and a local-island destination in its own right.

Beaches & photo spots on Maamigili

Maamigili Beyru

The outer-reef whale shark aggregation site along the island's ocean side. The marquee in-water subject, best by boat.

The island's designated swimwear beach, with lagoon shallows and an open horizon for portrait work.

Harbour and jetty

A working harbour on the atoll's busiest local island: fishing dhonis, cargo boats and daily-life frames.

Picnic island (by boat)

An uninhabited islet about ten minutes away by boat. Empty sand and lagoon for clean castaway-style setups.

Practical notes for Maamigili

01
Bikini beach rules

Maamigili is a conservative local community: swimwear is limited to the designated bikini beach, and modest dress is expected elsewhere on the island.

02
Drone considerations

Beyond the Maldives-wide MNDF and Civil Aviation Authority permits, Maamigili hosts Villa International Airport, and drone rules prohibit flying near airports. Treat the island as highly restricted airspace and seek explicit clearance.

03
Best season

December to May offers the best conditions, with the calm northeast-monsoon months of roughly November to April giving the highest whale shark success rates.

04
Getting there

FlyMe operates five to six 25-minute flights daily from Male to Villa International Airport; speedboats take about 90 minutes for around 50 USD and run daily except Friday, and the MTCC ferry runs Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays for about 3.50 USD over roughly six hours.

Golden hour: roughly the last 60–90 minutes before sunset, and the first hour after sunrise. We schedule every Maamigili session around it and move between jetty, beach and palm lines as the light changes.

Yes. Maamigili has a designated bikini beach, so swimwear and beachwear frames are fine there. Elsewhere on the island modest dress applies, which we plan around.

Often yes. Drone rules vary by island and resort; we check Maamigili's current permissions before your session and, where flying isn't possible, plan aerials from a nearby sandbank.
