About Hanimaadhoo

Hanimaadhoo is the gateway to the deep north of the Maldives: a long, green island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, nearly 290 km from Male, that hosts one of the country's few international airports. Some 2,700 people live here, and unusually for the Maldives the island stretches 6.8 km — most of it forest and farmland rather than village. It is also home to a meteorological observatory known for atmospheric research on the Asian brown cloud.

Where we shoot

Beaches & photo spots on Hanimaadhoo

Western beach

Long stretch of white sand facing west — the island's sunset side, with dhonis moored offshore.

Harbor and jetty

Departure point for dhoni cruises and island hopping across Haa Dhaalu; dolphin sightings are common on sunset cruises.

Forested interior road

Kilometers of shaded road and farmland down the island's spine — a green, un-Maldivian look that sets northern islands apart.

Practical notes for Hanimaadhoo

01
Getting there

Hanimaadhoo is reached by domestic flight from Male — about 45 minutes with Maldivian or Manta Air to Hanimaadhoo International Airport; there is no practical speedboat option from the capital at nearly 290 km.

02
Drone rules

Drones require MNDF approval and a Civil Aviation Authority permit nationwide, and Hanimaadhoo has an operating international airport on the island itself — flying near airports is expressly restricted, so treat aerial work here as effectively off the table without full clearance.

03
Beaches and dress

Tourist accommodations including the island's eco hotel front their own beach areas where swimwear is accepted; modest dress applies in the village as on all local islands.

04
Season

November to April is the Maldives dry season, which applies to the northern atolls as well.
