The destination

About Mirissa

Mirissa is a small south-coast bay that became Sri Lanka's whale-watching harbour: blue whales and sperm whales pass the continental shelf here, and boats leave the fishing harbour at dawn through the season. Behind the beach, a palm-covered spur known as Coconut Tree Hill runs out toward the water, and Parrot Rock sits offshore at the eastern end.

Where we shoot

Where we shoot in Mirissa

Coconut Tree Hill

A dense stand of palms on a headland above the sea, shot from the slope looking out. Best in the first hour of light, before it fills up.

Parrot Rock

A small rock island reached across the sand at low tide, with a short climb and a view back over the whole bay.

Secret Beach

A set of small coves west of the main bay, rockier and much quieter, good for close work without a crowd behind you.

Before you go

Practical notes for Mirissa

01
Season

Whale season runs roughly November to April, which is also when the south coast is calmest. Boats leave around dawn from the harbour at the western end of the bay.

02
Tides

The walk out to Parrot Rock depends on the tide. We check the day's tide before scheduling anything that needs the crossing.
