About Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay is a single sand road on the east coast and one of the better-known right-hand point breaks in Asia. Its season is the mirror of the south and west: when the south-west monsoon shuts down Mirissa and Unawatuna, Arugam Bay is dry, offshore and working, which is why the surf crowd moves across the island in May.

The east coast season runs roughly May to September. Outside it, much of the town closes and the swell disappears.
Elephants move through the area around Pottuvil at dawn and dusk, and lagoon crocodiles are present. We keep distance and shoot long.
