Trincomalee has one of the world's largest natural deep-water harbours, which is why every colonial power in the region fought over it. Fort Frederick still guards the neck of the peninsula, and at its tip Swami Rock drops straight into the sea below the Koneswaram temple, a Hindu site rebuilt after the Portuguese destroyed the original.

## Where we shoot in *Trincomalee*

- Swami Rock: A vertical cliff falling into blue water, with the temple's coloured gopuram above. Morning light comes from the sea side here.
- Koneswaram temple: Painted sculpture and open terraces at the headland. An active temple, so dress rules and shoe removal apply.
- Fort Frederick: Colonial walls and a tree-lined avenue with spotted deer wandering it, on the road up to the headland.

- Season: The east coast is at its best from roughly May to September, when the south and west are under monsoon.
- Temple etiquette: Koneswaram is a working temple. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off, and no photography inside the inner shrine.
