# Photographer in Nilaveli, Sri Lanka

Nilaveli is a long, straight run of white sand north of Trincomalee, wide and shallow and far emptier than anything on the south coast. Pigeon Island National Park sits a short boat ride offshore, one of Sri Lanka's two marine national parks, with living coral and blacktip reef sharks in the shallows.

## Where we shoot in *Nilaveli*

- The open beach: Kilometres of unbroken sand with almost nothing in frame. Sunrise here comes out of the sea, unusual for Sri Lanka.
- Pigeon Island: Coral shallows and clear water a short boat ride out. Snorkel and split-level frames on a calm morning.
- The shallow shelf: The water stays waist-deep a long way out, which makes in-water work straightforward without a boat.

## Practical notes for *Nilaveli*

- Sunrise coast: This is an east-facing beach, so the strong session is dawn rather than dusk, the opposite of the south and west.
- Pigeon Island: The park is ticketed with limited daily numbers and boats leave from Nilaveli beach. Standing on coral is prohibited.
