Thulusdhoo, capital of Kaafu Atoll about 28 km north of Male, is the surfing hub of the central Maldives: a working island of roughly 1,800 people known for boat-building yards, fish-drying racks, and the world's only Coca-Cola plant that bottles with desalinated seawater. Australian surfers put it on the map in the 1970s, and the reef breaks off its shore remain its signature.

## Beaches & photo spots on *Thulusdhoo*

- Cokes surf break: The powerful right-hander off the island's east side, named after the Coca-Cola factory. Barrels and surfer action shots, best in the March-October swell season.
- Chickens surf break: The long left-hander across the channel on neighbouring Villingilimathi Huraa, shot from a boat in the channel for wave-and-rider panoramas.
- Bikini beach: The designated tourist stretch of Thulusdhoo's beach, for swimwear portraits and lagoon shallows without leaving the island.
- Thingiri Point house reef: Shore-accessible fringing reef with turtles, morays and reef fish. Snorkel and split-shot territory, calmest in the morning.
- Boat yards and fish-drying racks: The island's working waterfront: texture, craft and local-life documentary frames away from the beach cliches.

## Practical notes for *Thulusdhoo*

- Surf season: Swell runs roughly March to October with the biggest, most consistent waves June to August, which is the window for surf photography. The dry Nov-Apr season brings calmer lagoons.
- Getting there: Public ferries from Male take 90 minutes or more for about 3 USD, but published day schedules vary by source, so confirm locally. Scheduled speedboats take about 25 minutes for around 30 USD.
- Bikini beach rules: Swimwear is allowed only on the designated tourist section of beach; modest dress applies across the rest of this inhabited island.

Golden hour: roughly the last 60–90 minutes before sunset, and the first hour after sunrise. We schedule every Thulusdhoo session around it and move between jetty, beach and palm lines as the light changes.

Yes. Thulusdhoo has a designated bikini beach, so swimwear and beachwear frames are fine there. Elsewhere on the island modest dress applies, which we plan around.
