Manadhoo is the capital of Noonu Atoll, an island of about 1,750 people roughly 176 km north of Malé, reached by a domestic flight to Maafaru and a short boat ride. It is the atoll's administrative and medical centre, a calm, spacious island with a protected harbour and wide lagoon, surrounded by the reefs and channels of a region known for fishing and, increasingly, for high-end resorts.
