Funadhoo is the capital of Shaviyani Atoll, an island of about 2,250 people on 0.85 km², roughly 220 km north of Malé and served by its own domestic airport. It is a long, green island with a protected harbour on the lagoon side and a long stretch of beach, and it acts as the gateway to an atoll of small fishing villages, resort-rimmed reefs and uninhabited islands.
