# Photographe à Unawatuna, Sri Lanka

Unawatuna sits in a curved, reef-sheltered bay just east of Galle, which is what made it Sri Lanka's first backpacker beach and keeps the water calmer than the open coast either side. The headland at the eastern end carries the white Japanese Peace Pagoda, and Jungle Beach lies over the ridge behind it.

- The bay curve: The whole arc of sand reads in one frame from the western end, with the headland closing the composition.
- Japanese Peace Pagoda: White stupa on the headland with the bay below. Late afternoon lights the seaward side; the climb takes about fifteen minutes.
- Jungle Beach: A small cove on the far side of the headland, quieter and backed by trees rather than restaurants.

- Season: The south-west coast is at its calmest and clearest from roughly December to April. The May to September monsoon brings swell and cloud to this side of the island.
- Crowds: The bay is busy through the middle of the day. Sessions run early or in the last hour of light, when the sand clears and the water goes flat.
